On Friday 15th February the students in Year 5 participated in a Leadership Course organised through the Scout Outdoor Education Program.
This program provided a shared experience involving students working together to build trust and rapport. The activities they participated in developed listening and communication skills, highlighted skills needed for leadership, how to work co-operatively with others and to build confidence.
Students began the day with having to untangle themselves out of a human knot, whilst the Scout Program Manager made arrangements with a tow truck to unbog his car. A highlight for many students was the human ladder where we saw many students being ‘risk takers’. To the ‘shake and move’ activity many thought it was an opportunity to dance when in fact we saw many ‘thinkers’ working as a team to build a multicoloured dance floor square puzzle. Many ‘communicators’ came alive in the ‘catapult’ activity where the students got wet and dirty as 20th century sponges flew through the air. Other activities included the students using their prior knowledge to construct a channel for water to flow, parachute games and caring for one another as they had to maneuver their team through an electric fence (imaginative). The day concluded with the staff (Mrs Reberger, Mrs Ritchie and a scout facilitator) versus the students in a grass ski race – As you can see from the photo the teachers were so far in front they weren’t in range for the shot. |
