Our French students are a very keen group and are
inspired by the enthusiasm of their teacher Mme Karen Perkins. Throughout the years, they have
produced some great projects which we would like to share with you. We also have some
links to French pages which may be helpful. We have our own email address
too, if any schools would care to write.

On Shrove
Tuesday, 24 February, 2004, French students at Rochedale State School in Years 6
and 7, celebrated
"Carnaval", a French Festival. Students made masks - 'les masques de Mardi
Gras'. Some of them were - 'le pirate(pirate), la japonaise (Japanese lady), le chat (cat), l'extra terrestre' (et),
le robot (robot), le clown (clown). Students in Year 7 made deer masks to reflect their studies of New Caledonia and
its fauna. Deer are called 'les cerfs' in French. Students also played French games including 'l'avaleur de pois'
- the pea game. C'est tres amusant!!!
Au Revoir!!

In 2003, French and Chinese are
both learnt only in Years 6 and 7. During the Mardi Gras celebrations this year

during the celebrations. Here's some photos of their colourful masks:

Bonjour! Ca va tre’s bien ici a Rochedale.
On Tuesday 22 October, 2002, a group of Year 7 French students and parents enjoyed
a feast of French and French/African cuisine at '‘LaKasbah’ Restaurant. The highlight of the evening were:-
- les escargots – Miam, miam!
- le vin blac et le vin rose’
- les profiteroles – delicieux!
An enjoyable ‘soiree’ for all who attended. Merci to parents and our
students – who the chef congratulated as the friendliest school group
they’ve had at the restaurant. I hope to have the restaurant excursion every year for our Year 7’s.
Au revoir et
A bientot, Mme Perkins
Fashion Parade
On the Tuesday before Easter, all of the Year 6
classes participated in a French parade. The fashions were not haute
couture, but all the commentaries were prepared by the mannequins in
French. Disco music was played over the speaker system in the
hall as each model pranced, danced, skated or skipped on to the stage.

Correspondence with France
M. Marc Armenier is the teacher of the
senior class at Ecole Nice on the French Riviera, and our Year 6 students have
been writing to his class. We have tried to overcome the difficulties of our
different holidays by ensuring that we write just before one of our breaks, thus
giving them our holiday to respond. Unfortunately, our key pals will be going to
college after their summer break in July and August.
We have sent off a snail mail packet of Australian
flag stickers, a few personal cards and information in English about our school,
as well as lots of emails and photos taken with our digital camera. In second
term, we will be preparing posters of things around Brisbane described in
French, and also of our native animals which are always fascinating to overseas
visitors. We have been surprised by the number of refugee children that France
takes in.
Correspondence with Wishart State School
Year 7 French students are at present communicating with Year 7's from
Wishart State School. Here's a photo of our brochures we are sending to
them.

Keypals:
Our liaison with
the College de l'Evre in Montrevault, Western France, is progressing well. Some
Year 7's continue to exchange emails and letters, while the Year 6's are taking
turns to take home and write about our kookaburra, Ollie, before he sets off for
France.
The teacher, Erick
Williamson, spent time in
England, and speaks English fluently, so is inspiring his students with a love
of the English language.
Projects:
Our research projects expand our knowledge of France. We have added topics like the Channel Tunnel, the Concorde, the TGV, the
Metro and Festivals of France.
The Year 7's did their third term research in display form for our fete on 26th August.

Ollie:
Here's a couple
of pictures of Ollie our Travel Buddy, who's off to France. Wish we could
go with him!!
