Year 5 Book Report

As part of their library lessons, Year 5g read the book "Blabber Mouth" by Morris Gleitzman, then wrote book reports and typed them up on our library computers. The kids showed they really enjoyed the book and formed a good understanding of the characters in their reports. Here's a few of them:

Setting
The story takes place in a rural area of present day Australia. Blabber mouth is centered around this school and local community.

Characters
Rowena Batts
Rowena can’t talk so she has to talk with her hands. She had to start at a normal school. Rowena lives on an apple orchard with her dad. Her mother died a long time ago. Rowena wants a friend. Her relation with her father is close but he embarrasses her.

Amanda Cosgrove
Amanda is a fast runner but only runs because her Dad wants her to. She learnt some sign language at summer school and she also has very curly hair. She tried to use Rowena in a community service project but Rowena didn’t want to. In the end she went.

Differences between Mr Batts and Mr Cosgrove

Mr Batts
Is a loving father
He owns an apple orchard
They both dislike each others taste in clothes!
He has country or western clothing
Mr Cosgrove

Ms Dunning doesn’t like Rowena’s dad but he likes her, so she pretends to love him.

Problem
Rowena’s just moved to a new school. On the first day she shoved a frog into a boy’s mouth. She locked herself in a closet. Her dad embarrasses her when he doesn’t know he is.

Solution
Rowena gets a sky writer and she gets him to write "pull your head in dad." When he tries to be normal. He runs off and locks himself in a closet.

- Rowena Batts can’t talk so she uses sign language. Rowena has just started at a normal school because she has just come from a special school. Rowena lives on an apple orchard. Rowena’s mother died so she wants a friend. She is very close to her father but she is embarrassed by him.

- Amanda Cosgrove is a fast runner but she doesn’t like running and only runs because her Dad makes her. Amanda Cosgrove speaks a little sign language. She has very curly hair and she wants to use Rowena for her community service project. Amanda Cosgrove is not a happy girl. Her father always yells at her on the other hand Rowena ‘s Dad is kind and cares about her.

The combination of Mr Batts and Mr Cosgrove
Mr Batts lives on an Apple orchard with Rowena.Mr Cosgrove owns a Mens wear store with Amanda.They dislike each other’s taste in clothes. Mr Batts likes country and western clothes but Mr Cosgrove likes stylish and modern clothes. Amanda’s Dad is selfish but Rowena’s dad is a loving father.

Problem
Rowena has just moved to a new school. Rowena wants more friends. Her father embarrasses her by what he wears.

Solution
Rowena didn’t like what her father wore but she realised that it didn’t matter what he wore she would always love him.

Recommendation
I thought that the story was interesting and I would recommend it for other children.

Amanda Cosgrove has long curly hair. Amanda Cosgrove wants to use Rowena for her community service for her project. She is a fast runner but she only runs because of her dad makes her. She has learnt some sign language so she can talk to Rowena. Amanda Cosgrove is not a happy girl. Her father always yells at her like to get of the gutter. Rowena’s dad is kind and cares about other people. But Amanda’s dad is mean.

A comparison of Mr Batts and Mr Cosgrove
Rowena’s dad owns his own apple orchard. But Amanda’s dad owns a Mens wear store. Mr Cosgrove and Mr Batts both dislike each other’s taste in clothes because Rowena’s dad likes to wear country and western clothes but Amanda’s dad wears stylish and modern clothes. Amanda’s father is very selfish but Rowena’s dad is a loving father.

Problem
Rowena’s has just started at a new school. She used to go to a special school because she is a mute person that can not talk. She has one friend called Amanda but she would like more friends. Her dad embarrasses her by wearing country clothes.

Solution
Rowena didn’t like the clothes that her father wore but then she realised that it doesn’t matter what her father wear any more because she will always love him for what he is. Rowena’s dad dressed in normal clothes.

Recommendation
I think that Rowena’s family is nice and loving but Amanda’s family is nice and sometimes mean.

Characters -
Rowena Batts is a mute and uses sign language to talk. She lives on an apple orchard and she has started at a normal school. She needs a friend she can trust. Her mum died when she was a child, her best friend Erin died as well. She lives with her dad now, but her dad embarrasses her in front of her friends.

 Amanda Cosgrove is a fast runner, but she only runs because her dad makes her. Amanda knows a little bit of sign language but she does not know a lot. Amanda wanted Roweena for a community service project.

Amanda has long curly hair.

Mr Batts is a loving father and he owns an apple orchard. Mr Batts likes country western music.

Mr Cosgrove is a very selfish man, he owns a mens wear shop. He is a modern dresser.

Miss Dunning is a teacher. She is a caring person, she used to be in love with Mr Batts.

Darren Peck is mean to people, so most people don’t like him.

Once Rowena shoved a frog in his mouth! He raced Rowena and lost so he had to eat another frog.

Recommendation:
I would give this book nine out of ten, because it was a funny and it was a good story.

Amanda Cosgrove is a fast runner and only runs because her dad makes her.

Rowena Batts just started a normal school and desperately needs a friend.

Mr Cosgrove is selfish stylish and wears modern clothes and owns a menswear store.

Mr Batts is a loving father. He wears country and western cloths. He does not like Mr Cosgrove and Mr Batts lives on an apple orchard.

Ms Dunning is a caring teacher and she is fowling in love with Mr Batts.

The story is an excellent story and I would give it 9/10 because it is written well.

She has a disability and she can’t speak. Rowena has just moved to a normal school from a special school. She uses sign language to communicate to people who know sign language other wise she uses a note pad. She has only just found a friend, which is Amanda Cosgrove. Here dad and Mr. Cosgrove, Amanda’s father hate each other. Rowena is trying to get here father to not embarrass here. Although it was partly here fault because in the end she liked him just the way he was and when he did put a suit on it didn’t look good on him.

Amanda Cosgrove
Amanda Cosgrove is a kind person but at first she wanted to use her as a community service project. But now she just wants to be her friend and her father is getting mad at her for not getting a community service project so Rowena went any way for her sake.

Mr. Batts
Mr. Batts is Rowena’s father and he likes to wear country and western clothes that are really bright and Rowena is getting embarrassed by his clothes and the way he acts like jumping up and down when she was getting near the finish line.

Mr.Cosgrove
Mr.Cosgrove is Amanda’s father and he wants here to do everything he does unlike Mr Batts. He wants here to run even though she doesn't want to and she has to get a community service project.

The problem was that whenever Rowena's Dad came anywhere he embarrassed here with his clothes.

The solution was that Mr Batts got into a suit and she liked him just the way he was.

Amanda Cosgrove is a fast runner. She doesn’t like running but her father makes her. She can also do a little bit of sign language but she isn’t that good at it. She has very curly hair and she is in the same class as Rowena. She sits on the other side of the classroom. She became Rowena’s friend but Rowena thought that this was just so that she could use her for a community service project.

Mr Batts lives on an apple orchard with Rowena. He wears old country and western clothes. Mr Batts dislikes Mr Cosgrove’s clothes. Mr Batts is a loving father and puts his needs after everyone else’s.

Mr Cosgrove owns a menswear store. He is very modern and stylish with his clothes. He dislikes Mr Batts clothes as well. Unlike Mr Batts, Mr Cosgrove is very selfish. He does not pay that much attention to Amanda.

Problem -
Rowena moved to a new school from a special school. She only has one friend Amanda and wants more. Her dad embarrasses her by wearing old cowboy clothes and sings in the public. When Rowena and her father are alone she loves him and he doesn’t embarrass her but in public he does.

Solution -
Rowena’s father started to understand the way that Rowena felt about him and Rowena started to understand the way that he felt about her so Mr Batts started wearing normal clothes and then Rowena understood that it wasn’t his clothes it was him inside.

Recommendation -
I would recommend this story to people that like funny stories. I enjoyed this book because it was funny and the characters were great.
