2000

On Wednesday, 7 June, 2000, Years 5G, 5P and 5K went to the Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens and the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium. It was a great day out and the Gardens were as beautiful as always.

The kids settled into their banana bus, the only one big enough to hold 65 kids. Once we were at the Botanical Gardens, we headed off to the Lagoon for morning tea.

The lagoon has plenty of birds living on and around it. They searched among the water plants for food as well as being fed by the kids.

This duck seemed a bit sure about the blue and yellow invasion. Morning tea on the wall beside the lagoon.

The ever present ibis thought it was morning tea too. These ducks made a pretty sight with the blue sky reflecting in the water.

After filling in the booklet at the lagoon, it was on to the tropical dome. It wasn't big enough to hold all of us at once, so we went inside in 2 sessions.

It was a different world inside, a great contrast to outside. The kids had to find all sorts of different tropical plants.

This pitcher plant is carnivorous, just as well it was hanging up high!! This white flower was just beginning to bloom.

The pond had fish and water lilies and money in it. Then it was on to the arid area, another different climate zone.

The children had fun finding all the different plants in their booklets. This barrel cactus uses its spines for strength.

Then it was on to the fragrant garden with all sorts of herbs and lovely plants to smell. Finally, it was time for the Planetarium. We had time to look around the displays first.

The kids really liked the lunar models. These pieces of meteorite were fascinating.

The walls have many interesting pictures of planets and space. After our talk about the planets, it was time for lunch in the gardens before leaving for school.

The birds thought it was lunch time too and waited patiently for a feed. Then it was back in line for our trip back to school, don't they look pleased to be going back!!
