FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Thoughts for the Week

“The Lord is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made.”    Psalm 145:13

The Queen at 80
While we celebrated the Queen’s Birthday on the wrong day [she was actually born a few months ago] we still enjoyed the experience. A TV documentary about Her Majesty at 80 was seen by many last Sunday night. Whether pro- or anti monarchist one has to commend Her Majesty for tenacity, focus and dedication. Her endurance ‘race’ makes her one of the longest reigning monarchs in the world. Celebrating her birthday with a long week-end gave all Australians a chance to relax and spend quality time together, something increasingly more important in the fast pace of contemporary society.

Mike Moves On
Education Queensland’s recent announcement that Principal Mike Gordon has been appointed Principal of Yugumbir State School has obvious implications for us here at Rochedale State School. Mike’s distinguished teaching career began several decades ago. Following the path of working in many different schools around Queensland, Mike ascended the promotion ladder and, along the way, endeared himself to staff, students and parents. Mike’s down-to-earth style, honed from country experiences in western Queensland and other rural hamlets endeared him to all who made his acquaintance. Mike’s tenure at Rochedale State School left an indelible mark on the school. His clear thinking, no-nonsense approach, cut ground with Rochedale locals. Mike Gordon’s leadership of Rochedale State School will long be remembered as a period of growth, consolidation and future focus. His new posting at Yugumbir, now confirmed by Education Queensland, takes Mike to the next level of responsibility. A decidedly larger school, staff and student population, calls on great leadership skills. These, I happen to know, will be drawn from Mike’s extensive repertoire for the benefit of his new teaching environment. On behalf of the Rochedale school community I take the opportunity to wish Mike and his family that success he so richly deserves while officially recognising the wonderful legacy he leaves behind.

So who stays on?
I am pleased to announce that I have been entrusted by Education Queensland to continue as Acting Principal until year’s end at Rochedale State School. My first year at this great school is now almost concluded. The fact that I shall be staying on for another 6 months in the role as your Principal has pleased me. From the outset of my tenure I have been impressed by the school, its ethics, principles and vision. I have been fortunate to inherit that staff loyalty, professionalism and dedication my predecessor Mike Gordon enjoyed. I strive to reciprocate that same loyalty and am happy to continue in my role as your Principal. This school will never be a one-man-band. Our successes are shared, as are our obstacles and barriers. Thankfully there are more of the former than the latter. To this end I would like to highlight the wonderful exposure our gifted students have received outside, beyond the school boundary fence.

Education Week
Busy Carindale Shopping Centre paused, Centre court, to enjoy the wonderful voices of our two choirs the other day. Shoppers plonked their bags down, jaws dropping, eyes misting up at the clear sound of our very professional choirs. Forget, for a moment, instruments be they strings or brass, and focus on that God-given instrument we all carry around – voice! The talented choirs from Rochedale were clearly crowd favourites during Education Week. One animated shopper exclaimed, “These kids should be on Australian Idol.” Another suggested the Queensland Opera company. Yes, for a few brief moments the beeping sound of the checkout scanners of Coles and Woolworths gave way to the combined voices of Rochedale’s two polished choirs. Well done, Mr Joel Eames, our choirmaster. And guess what…?

It did not end there…
At the recent Redlands Eisteddfod our band received a Highly Commended. These awards are not given out willy nilly, but require for their attainment commitment, strong commitment. The instrumental lessons lay the foundation, yet it is the practice at home for many hours which make the difference. Children can be justifiably proud of their achievements and we salute their efforts. Some of our students in Year 7 will attend an upcoming Music Camp this week at Rochedale State High School. This will be an excellent forum to hone their craft and meet other instrumental musicians from around the district. As a culmination of the music camp our students will be part of a concert at Springwood State High School this Thursday, 15th June. This concert, open to the public, showcases the talent of youth in the area. Do take the opportunity to hear our best, many of whom are destined to a career in music in years to come.

Walk-a-thon this week
Yes, it’s time to dust off your Nikes, Adidas, Pumas or the plain K-mart variety for a fun-filled, yet important walk. This time all funds raised are staying inside the school perimeter fence through an injection of new playground and sporting equipment. It is an excellent way to stay fit. Everyone can walk at their own pace, while making money for a worthwhile cause. On the subject of sporting equipment I am pleased to announce that the long awaited backboards for our basketball hoops are about to be installed. This will thrill the many devotees who love the game of basketball. We can expect good patronage as the boys and girls work out with their shooting skills using state-of-the-art backboards.

And that’s the way it is this Tuesday….

Junior Netball
Both Junior A and Junior B played in the last game of the netball season last Friday.

Junior A played a tough match for 5th place against Wishart but were unlucky to be beaten in the final few minutes.

Junior B made it into the finals, where they played a very courageous game against Mansfield. Although we were well beaten on the day the girls never stopped trying.

I would like to thank the girls for the sportsmanship the have shown over the season and the effort they all put in.

Mrs Fenwick (coach)
