Art show success
I was pleased to meet so many visitors last Friday. The success of our Art Extravaganza augers well for such events. Maybe we could repeat our exhibition biannually? There are too many people to thank for helping make the evening so special, but particular thanks must go to Ms Kate Duncanson and Mrs Debbie Conroy for organising such a terrific evening.  On the subject of art we were saddened by the death of Broken Hill legend Pro Hart at the age of 76. Hart left a legacy of bush art which enshrines him in the Australian psyche of the humble, self taught mine worker who became a household name, painting thousands of images over a career spanning close to five decades. His ability to retain the common touch, his refusal to relocate from Broken Hill to Sydney, his commercial appeal and larrikin antics in memorable commercials, such as the unforgettable carpet snip where he crawls around covered in paint and spaghetti while an Italian cleaner moans ‘Oh, Meester Hart, Meester Hart!’ caused him to be shunned by the curators at the National Gallery. Not one Pro Hart painting is to be found on its walls. My favourite Hart painting is a relatively early work “Finding God” where the painter scaffolds the congregation on planks, temporarily levering the church steeple to, purportedly, check if God is present. A most powerful oil on canvass on display in Pro Hart’s own gallery in Broken Hill. Critics aside, I for one would treasure a Pro Hart original adorning the Principal’s office.

Different holidays
As term 1 draws to an end this Friday Education Queensland is gazetting its school holidays differently. In the past schools have broken up on Maundy Thursday commencing the Easter Holidays with Good Friday and running through the following week. This year we do it differently by breaking up a week earlier. The duration of the Easter break is of course the same as always, only the dates are different. This has been a long term for students and Staff. Much has been achieved since late January. The positive feedback which reaches my deputies and I makes for a happy school where great learning is taking place. It’s not rocket science to work out that if students, teachers, administrators and principals have common goals, common aspirations, and ‘all bat for the same team’ great scores can be achieved. Our enrolment numbers are steadily increasing, suggesting that our school’s reputation as a safe, enjoyable place of learning is growing well beyond our school’s geographical borders.

Easter Holidays are much more than hot-cross buns from Coles or Easter eggs from Woolworths. Our students have looked at the impact of Easter in history. Several Class Easter activities will occur this week. Our ‘little people’ will no doubt shine in their Easter Bonnet parade, while the topic of Easter and its message will resonate not only here at Rochedale State School, but in every school across Queensland. In an increasingly secular society Easter still occupies, alongside Christmas, the pivotal position of Christian holy days. In times of uncertainty and change across the board, many draw comfort from the enduring message of Easter, a point of enduring comfort for young and old alike. May you all have a safe, wonderful and enjoyable Easter 2006.

Feedback
The following letter was received at the office last week.  I believe it speaks for itself…

Dear Mrs Smith, yesterday I attended the Year 4 Excursion.  It was good to see such good behaviour from all students.  Mrs Lawrie and the other Year 4 teachers should be congratulated for their leadership qualities.

ARTS EXTRAVAGANZA
We raised over $5,000-00, which is great.  Thank you for a wonderful night.  To all those that gave up their time on Friday night, we truly appreciate it.  Deb Conroy, I could not have done it without you, you are an amazing lady.  Maria and Michelle, your effort in the kitchen was fantastic.  Janelle Gover  constantly gave 100%.  There were so many other helpers.  Katrina, Jean, Fran, Leigh, Karen, David, Gail, Joel, Trish Gover, Vicky, Craig, David W, Gayle and so many more – thankyou!  The night was a success because of those that made the time and effort to come and because of your generous nature and amazing support.

Thank you
Kate Duncanson

For those people who missed out on my special announcement, I presented the school with a tiled chess table.  The craft ladies made the table from one of the old school desks.  The table is to be used in the library.  I hope the children get many hours of use from the chess table.

P.S.      The craft group will be starting after Easter.  Keep all those empty Easter baskets and chickens and we will use them.  These donated goods can be left at tuck shop.
