FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Thoughts for the Week
“Love is patient, love is kind”
1 Corinthians 13:4

**********************

“Never borrow sorrow from tomorrow”

Fathers’ Day
We hardly need reminders. The previous five week’s junk mail delivery have brought home, albeit a flawed message, that Dad will only find joy and exultation with a powerful grinder, drill or chainsaw in his hand. Yes, Dad’s across the length and breadth of Queensland will rummage across the lounge room in search of ‘just the right’ present. Truth is, of course, that few fathers need the aforementioned tools to make them happy. Our school’s champion fundraisers, the Parents and Citizens’ Association will be providing a Fathers’ Day stall on Thursday and Friday of this week. Not only have the P&C provided excellent value for money for our many potential customers, but also provide a real alternative to store-bought items. Fathers’ Day does not end there however. In every classroom there will no doubt be keen art activities where children have been encouraged to make a card for Dad. I guess therein lies the essence of Fathers’ Day… a day when we salute our Dads for all the great work, support and love they bring our lives.

Artists on Show
This week sees the annual Primary Art Network’s Art Exhibition at the Logan Hyperdome. The Exhibition opens tomorrow (Tuesday 30th August) at 4:30pm by Mrs Desley Scott (MP) and will see not only a number of Rochedale State School’s fledgling artists work on display, but will also see a performance by our school’s choir. I would encourage all parents if you are visiting the Hyperdome over the next week to take a few moments and wander through the display which is situated outside the Myer store.

Old Building Material
On Wednesday 22nd August work was undertaken at our school to remove a number of wall sheeting units that had been stored for a considerable length of time under the ROSCHA building. This area is out of bounds to children and had been barricaded off. Whilst we are awaiting tests on the material, precautions were taken to have the sheeting removed by a licensed asbestos removalist over the Brisbane show public holiday. I am committed to keeping all parents and staff informed of this issue. Be assured that at all times student and staff safety are our highest concern.

Prep is coming – Questions answered

1.    When will the preparatory year start in Queensland?

From 2007, State, Catholic and Independent schools in Queensland will offer a non-compulsory, full-time preparatory year. Until then, the preparatory year will be phased in at 96 state and non-state schools in 2005. An extra 20 state and 5 non-state schools will phase in the preparatory year in 2006.

2.    How will the new preparatory year change the school starting age?

From 2008 the compulsory school starting age will increase by 6 months. Children must be six by 30 June in the year they enrol in Year 1. now, children can start Year 1 if they turn six any time during that year. However, the preparatory year is non-compulsory and is not a requirement before children begin Year 1.

More Prep questions and answers in next week’s newsletter.

Chocolate Drive
Just a reminder that the Chocolate Drive finishes this Friday. We receive a considerable profit from this drive each year, with the money raised being donated to the school for various projects. Last year the money raised was used to air condition the Library.

I am sure Mr Smith and the school community will be able to use this years profit to purchase valuable resources for our school that will enrich our children’s time at Rochedale State School.

Thank you for your support

The RE program here at Rochedale is looking for people who would like to take a Grade 1, Grade 3 or Grade 7 RE class next year.

RE is taught to each class here at Rochedale for half an hour each week, utilizing an ecumenical curriculum that has a comprehensive teacher’s manual.

The timing of the RE lesson is worked out to suit the RE teacher and the classroom Teacher. The classroom teacher is present in the classroom throughout the RE lesson and offers support and help with class management etc.

The Rochedale RE team also provides support, ideas and help. “On the Job’ training can be arranged during Term 4 this year, if it would suit. In addition to this, we have a training course for beginner RE Teachers being offered in Term 4, this year.
