Found: Typed in Wolf Spiders
Phrase: Best page I've seen all year!
Comments: I recently found a large spider on my kitchen floor. My husband captured it so I could have it looked at. The man from Terminex said it was a Wolf Spider. Are they common in Northern California? We live about 1 hour north of San Francisco. I had never seen one of these spiders before and it was about 4 to 5 times the size of a normal black house spider, but it had a light brownish-yellow body with black stripes on it's back. It also had large fangs that were black. It didn't look very much like the pictures you have on your website. The man from Terminex said it's bite was similar to a bee sting. I have two small dogs, Chihuahuas, and I am concerned there might be more of these critters walking around my house or yard. Can you help me to figure out if the technician was correct in his diagnosis of the spider, or if it was just a garden variety spider, and I have nothing to worry about. I would hate to do nothing and loose one of my pets to a spider bite. Your swift response is appreciated. Thank you, Mary Stornetta

Comments: Hi. Just thought I'd send another message. I didn't have much time before. Your web page was absolutely fantastic. I am most impressed with all the information and different ideas. We (Grade 3/4) are about to start a topic about spiders. One of my students brought in a red-back with its egg sack. I'm not too keen on spiders but the children were excited about keeping it. I was surprised to find your story on the internet. I'm actually getting excited about keeping the spider too. We found one of the tradesmen around school who wasn't worried about them, to put it in another jar - his new nickname is now "Spiderman". Thanks for your great ideas! This web page is an inspiration for both teachers and students. Thank you! Karyn Phillips - Grade 3/4 Teacher, St Brendan's Primary School
