Year 5 Goldfield
Excursion
On Tuesday, 4th
and Wednesday, 5th August, 2009, Year 5 classes from
Rochedale State School went on an excursion to the Goldfields located at
Bahr’s Scrub near Beenleigh. The bus trip took nearly 20 minutes to get
there. |
|
When we arrived we
met a man on a horse whose name was Captain Lucas. Captain Lucas as we
later found out, was a bushranger and robbed one of the students of his
gold and morning tea. It was really funny. A lady by the name of Miss
Kate rode her horse up and scared Captain Lucas away. Once it was safe,
Miss Kate escorted us through the Cobb and Co staging area and onto the
goldfields. While she was taking us to the goldfields, Captain Lucas
reappeared. Captain Lucas and Miss Kate engaged in a shootout with
Captain Lucas surrendering. |

When we
got to Sue’s Port, we sat down and went through the rules with Miss
Kate. Once that was done, we were allowed to look around the goldfields.
We saw some amazing things such as, tents, skeletons, Hessian clothes,
digging sites, old fashioned tools, a gaol (which was used a fair bit
during the day) and some shops. |

When we
came back, we all sat down and had some morning tea. After morning tea
we broke up into our class groups and did some activities. These
activities included making damper, panning for gold using cradles,
spades and pans. We also had a competition in tent building. It was
quite difficult using only sticks and ropes. It was fun though! When it
came to lunch, we had a sausage sizzle and some damper with golden syrup |

After
lunch we played the ‘Gold Rush’ game. During the game we had to go out
and find nuggets of gold and bring them back to the Assayer’s Office and
haggle for a good price. Some students were lucky and received either 5,
10 or 20 pounds for their gold. Also, if we were caught without our hats
on we were sent to gaol for a short period of time. |

When the day came to
an end, our classes climbed aboard the bus for the return journey back
to class giving us time to reflect about our time on the goldfields at
Bahr’s Scrub and how time has changed over the past 150 years.
