Year 5 students at
Rochedale State School had their third visit from Wayne Larsen, our friendly Red Cross First Aid Instructor, on
Monday, 11 May, 1999. This time, Wayne taught the children how to do different sorts of bandaging. If any other school would like a visit from Wayne, please email him, we highly recommend his lessons for the children. This time, Mrs Clarkson's class were the subjects of our photos and the report is by Mrs Clarkson, who really enjoyed having her head bandaged by Stephanie!! |

| First Wayne demonstrated how to control bleeding with a bandage on Carleigh's arm. | The children then all practised on each other. |
If bleeding from a limb: |
| 1.
Place a pad on the wound. 2. Bandage the pad in place. |
3.
Elevate the limb. 4. Rest. |
|
|
| Wayne then showed the children the correct method of rolling up a bandage by rolling it from the top to the bottom down the leg. | Then the children practised bandaging the palm of the hand. |
If bleeding from the palm of the hand: |
| 1.
Patient clenches the pad. 2. The whole hand is bandaged in that position. |
3.
Elevate the hand. 4. Rest. |
|
|
| Next Wayne demonstrated how to apply a sling using a triangular bandage. | This bandage is used to support an injury to the lower arm, below the elbow. |
| 1. The top of the
triangle is towards the elbow. 2. The other end is the put over the opposite shoulder to tie with the end under the elbow. 3. Then secure the elbow end. |
|
|
| Then the children are show how to make a Collar and Cuff sling. | This is used to support the arm after damage to the upper arm or shoulder. |
| It is also used to
elevate an arm after bandaging for bleeding. 1. Use a triangular bandage. 2. Fold until long and thin. 3. Make a clove hitch knot. |
|
|
| Next they learnt how to apply a bandage to the head in case of bleeding or a skull fracture. | The children were keen to practise this one. |
| 1. For bleeding apply
a pad with light pressure to the edges of the pad only. 2. Hold in place with a triangular bandage. |
|
|
| Practising head bandaging with a little help from Wayne. | Mrs Clarkson also got into the act, doesn't she look sweet!! |
Once again an excellent lesson, thanks a lot Wayne. We'll look forward to our next one on bites and stings!!
