In 2004, Year 5 children at Rochedale
State School were again privileged to have a visit from Wayne Larsen, a Red
Cross First Aid Instructor, who kindly comes to our school to talk to the
children in Year 5, each year. Here's some photos of his lesson about basic
first aid and controlling bleeding. The children learnt a lot in their hour
and a half talk and hopefully will remember what they learnt if they ever
need to use it!!
Wayne taught the children the five basic steps to check a patient's response
when injured -
D - Danger
R - Response
A - Airways
B - Breathing
C - Circulation

Lesson 1. Here's some photos:
Wayne shows the
children the five basic steps.
The children find
their carotid artery to check their pulse.
They also learnt how
to find it in their wrist.
Make sure not to use
your own thumb which has a pulse.
Wayne showed the
children how to check for response.
Tapping on the foot
is the safest way to check.
One arm is placed on
the chest.
Then the knee is
raised.
The patient is gently
rolled onto the side.
One knee is raised to
keep them there.
The mouth is checked
for obstructions.
The head is tilted
back.
Then the children had
a turn.
The head is tilted
back.
The knee is raised??
The mouth is checked?
The patient lies on
their back.
This head is
certainly raised!!
Wayne demonstrates
how much blood an adult can lose.
This bottle holds
700mL and looks like a lot.
Then Wayne
demonstrated bandaging to stop bleeding.
The arm was bandaged
to control the bleeding.
This helps us to
remember how to bandage for bleeding.
All done, bleeding
stopped!!
