Education Week at Rochedale State School

In Queensland Schools, we celebrate Education Week from 18 May to 22 May. During that week, we have a lot of special activities in our school for the students.

The Years 5 to 7 Students took part in two Competitions - the Rochedale Challenge at Rochedale High School which involved Problem Solving and Physical Activity and the Coopers Plains District Maths Challenge. Our students tried hard in both Competitions and were successful in coming second in the Maths Challenge, with some really challenging problems to solve. If you'd like to have a go at some of them, click here.

We also held our Cross Country Competition to select students to compete in the Nathan District Cross Country. Each child also earned points for their House, with Waratah House winning the Years 1 - 4 Shield and Jacaranda House, the Years 5 - 7.

As a celebration for education week the Year Ones involved themselves in a week of fun learning activities. The first activity being a visit by Rochedale High School. This enabled the children to get close to the animals that they rarely see. The students of Rochedale High School shared their knowledge of the animals with the Year Ones.

These boys enjoyed hugging Louise the cow. These children are looking for the sheep's skin under the wool.

Rochedale's Donald Duck, he played the part so well. Loise, our friend really liked the camera.

Then on Tuesday the school's cross country was held, this being a day where the children were bubbling with excitement as it was their first "big athletic event".

Wednesday was the next day full of excitement for the children as it was their dress up day. The costumes were to be the childrens' favourite book character. Some examples were: Donald Duck, Snow White, Little Miss Muffet and Waltzing Matilda. Check out the photo to see how successful the day was and how creative the children were.
Our three Dalmations

Thursday was a great family day with all the parents being invited to join in sausage sizzle lunch. After the sausage sizzle the afternoon was packed with fun activities for the parents and the children including such activities as egg & spoon, sack race and fun relays.

To end the week the Year Ones explored the "Science Spot" located at the Science Centre. All children enjoyed the challenge of making the rocket blast off. The children were taped and had the opportunity to see themselves on TV that night.

The children collected balls at the Science Centre to fill the rocket. The rocket is full and ready for blast-off!

What a tight spot! Look we can see Superman!

And that was Education Week for 1998. We really enjoyed the week and look forward to next year!
