CRAB SPIDERS |

November, 2004:
Found your sit eon the net while looking for spider pictures.
I took this picture of a hummingbird moth last May or June and
forgot about it until I got a new printer and was trying it out.
Any idea of what it may be? I live in southeastern Pennsylvania. Its
on a Butterfly bush. That’s about all of the info I have. I am into
wildlife (have degrees in Forestry and Wood Products) but I work,
use my camera and spare time for motorcycle stunting. Thanks for any
help

My friend just sent me this photo. He said he took it through
a loupe. We live in Los Angeles, CA. Unfortunately he didn't tell me
how large it was. Can you identify it?
Thank you,
Sandy Mayer |

Dear Cool Spider Site, I found a spider on a buddies truck
that we had never seen before in Oregon. My buddy has a lot of
furniture imported from Indonesia and thought maybe this spider
originated from that region. We all are curious what kind of spider
this is and if you could identify it, is it dangerous?? I look
forward to hearing back from you.

I was wondering if you could tell me what kind of spider this
is. I took this picture in New Jersey this past weekend. As you can
see he is sitting on the flower enjoying a fly for lunch. If you
could get back to me that would be great.
Thanks!

18 July, 2004:
Found this little fellow on an orchid that blew off a plant
in the wind. All I could see at first was the moth then noticed the
silk coming off it and then the tiny white and translucent crab
spider. I moved it onto another yellow orchid where it could live
for a bit longer. Click for a larger view. |

Reply: Some of the flower spiders are able
to change their color over several days, typically between white and
yellow, depending on the color of the flower on which they are
resting. |

Great pages!
Will attach a photo of one my son found on our
roses last night, which by scanning your photos
looks like the white Crab Spider you show. This one caught my son's
eye first because we have not seen any number of white spiders here
in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. Then he noticed that the two horizontal
strips on the spider's body were also pink, and wondered if the
spider was capable of colour change. Any thoughts?

This is a species of Crab Spider, found with a fly on a
Zinnia last summer. This spider had trash service! Ants would
come by and clear away all the fly husks on a daily basis.

On studying a neighbour's roses I wondered why a bee appeared
to be stuck in the petals of one of them. On closer inspection, we
found this beautiful white spider firmly attached to the bee, trying
to make a meal of it. I suspect it is a crab spider (flower spider)
from the shape of its abdomen. Click the photo for a larger view. |
