As eggs are a
significant symbol of Easter, Year 3I and 3/4G at Rochedale
State School, participated in an integrated study examining this
topic. Our unit covered the Key Learning Areas of Science, SOSE,
Language, Maths, Art and Technology.
During the
orientating phase of the unit, the children engaged in
meaningful activities including egg experiments, identifying
parts of an egg and animals that lay eggs.
In order to
enhance these activities we organised to have an egg hatching
program delivered to the classroom. This program gave the
children first hand experience in observing the first stages of
the chicken life cycle.
The Henny Penny
Egg Hatching Program
was set up for two weeks, beginning Monday, 17th
March, 2003. The children were responsible for the monitoring
the incubation unit, observing the hatching of the chicks, and
feeding the chicks as they grew.
While the
program was set up the children were actively participating in
relevant activities including written observations, chicken
descriptions, growth timelines, egg-cellent egg words, and the
part they enjoyed the most being the chicken jokes which they
brought along each day to share with the class.
To celebrate the children’s
chicken rearing success we organised an EGGSTRAVAGANZA DAY.
On this day parents were invited to view the children’s
work, in particular all their egg work, and bring an
eggstravagant delicacy to share for lunch. To comply with
the Eggstravaganza theme these delicacies were made of
egg or chicken. The children wore Easter hats which they had
made for homework.
