Long long ago, on a faraway planet of Vocab, the children were happy. They worked hard at school, played games, read books, told stories to each other and enjoyed life. However, things began to change. Television, DVDs, Ipods, Play Stations and Wiis were invented. The children enjoyed watching cartoon shows and DVDs, listening to music and playing thousands of games on their computers and Play Stations. They began to stop reading.
Soon, they did not talk to each other as much. They were not able to tell interesting stories or good jokes. The rulers of Vocab became very, very worried. The children of Vocab were becoming boring! They could only talk using baby words!! They couldn’t write interesting stories. They couldn’t even understand what people were saying in the DVDs they watched. They couldn’t read the instructions for their computer games!!! The children were no longer happy.
The rulers of Vocab knew that they must do something!! They had to find a person to help the children to read again, to know the fun of enjoying a really good story or book!!
They began to search the planet, looking for someone who could be the chosen one, someone who could help the children once again love books.
After many months of searching, they heard about a man – a man who lived in the little town of Ulary on planet Vocab. His house was made of books. In every room the walls were made of books!! At any time of the day or night, he could simply walk up to a wall, open a book and read about anything he wanted. This man was not only strong and handsome, he was clever, funny and interesting. Why? Because he read!!!
The rulers of Vocab know they had found the chosen one – Captain Readit!
Captain Readit travelled all over Vocab, from north to south, east to west. He searched for, and found, 17 children who were to be his deputies. These were children who had not stopped reading, who still enjoyed this wonderful past-time. To each and every child, he presented them with a cape. This cape would identify these children as clever readers.
These children were given the job of encouraging other children to read, to learn to love reading and the fun and knowledge it could give them. Within a few short years the children were once again reading.
There was laughter in the playground, children being able to tell jokes, ask riddles and share knowledge. The rulers of Vocab were happy and Captain Readit became a hero to all the Vocab people. With his work on Vocab complete, Captain Readit was sent from Vocab to search the universe for other planets where children no longer read as much as they could. Travelling from galaxy to galaxy, Captain Readit has been helping select clever readers on every planet he visits.
Boys and girls, today we have the biggest surprise of all. Captain Readit has landed on Earth and has decided to start his work right here at Rochedale State School.
