Habitat:
The elephant is found in South Sahara Desert, Asia (India) and
Africa. Elephants live in herds and groups.

Movement:
Elephants usually walk noiselessly and gracefully. They can’t gallop or jump. An elephant walks as fast as 6.4 km per hour.

Protection:
Elephant has tusks or tushes (smaller tusks, mainly on females and smaller males) as part of its protection. It also has skin that is 3cm deep. Their tusks length up to 5-weight up to 40 lbs.

Size/Life Span:
They are the largest land mammals at 3m [10 feet] and 7000 kg. At the full age they weight 9000 kg.

Covering/Coat:
Their skin is leathery, grey and wrinkly. Elephants have two humps on the head. An African elephant has a smooth head.

Food:
They eat grass, leaves, roots and fruits. An elephant drink as much as 190 litres. [50 gallons] A cow [female] will eat up to a bale of hay, 20 to 80. They eat up to 18-20 hours it daily feed.


Reproduction:
The female will have babies in her 15th or 16th year. A baby elephant is called a calf. The mother will give milk from her breast.

An elephant will live up to 55-65 years. Males have to be between the age of 8-12 yrs and the female has to be between the age 6-12yrs before they can breed.
