Australia is a land of many contrasts. Each year when we commence school for the year, there seems to be some sort of disaster occurring in some part of Australia. In 1997, it was devastating bushfires and in 1998 and 1999, floods. In 2000 to celebrate the new millennium, Mother Nature was kind and we were lucky to get through Australia Day with no disasters anywhere. In 2002, we once again saw disaster in the form of bushfires sweeping across New South Wales at Christmas time, and again in 2003, Canberra and the Southern States experienced the worst bushfires in their history-  So this year's Acrostic poems are once again dedicated to the courageous fire fighters who, in some cases, lost their own homes while trying to save the homes and lives  of others.  To make a financial donation online to those affected by the devastating effects of the fires, head to The ACT Bushfire Recovery Appeal at https://www.trading.act.gov.au/CC/fasttrack?69, a community fund set up by the ACT Government.  Canberra fires - Photographer: Tim Grainger (telephone 0403 763 250)

Acrostic Poetry is written using a word as the title and each letter of the word then begins each line of the poem.

Again the dreaded fires came,
Unusual winds and weather created a fire storm,
Saving lives became the priority,
Though some still perished,
Round the nation we grieved,
And rallied to help our fellow man who
Lost everything.
I dedicate this page again to
All brave Australians.

Australia's wonderful beach and sand
Under the clear blue sky
Salty water everywhere
Though fires across dry land
Rain isn't falling
And the drought is getting worse
Luckily fire-fighters and fighting fire and
I hope it doesn't get worse
And it starts to rain

by John

Australia
Under the starry sky
Smoke was in the air
The fires were nearly unstoppable as they spread from town to town
Roofs, cars even watches were left burnt or in ashes
And as these brave men fought the blaze,
Little did they know their own houses were on fire
In the end people saw their house left in ruins
And houses were lost so we say ,"Thanks for the help"

Australia is damaged but it still can live.
Uluru  still live for a very long time.
South Australia is very hot in Summer.
Trying to keep our  environment alive.
Rules of Australia that people obey.
Australia is a very good country.
Lonely people that have no family should get sponsored.
In Australia there are lots of people in Victoria.
Australia is a very old country.

Australian blazes roar
Underneath our radiant Southern Cross
Sun rays are hot ,sand at the beach are hotter
Trying  to save our bush land the battle's just begun
Racing against time to save our homes
Australia is a great land
Losing loved ones is not fair
Islands near and far
All those people are so devastated so help us in our fight because we are all Australian

By   Rhys Hilton

Australia has nice people and the
Union jack is on the flag.
Some beaches are crowed. Tracks are long but at the end it's worth it.
Running around is sometimes hot.
Animals are cute and some are ugly.
Land is easy to find.
In Australia it is a lot of fun.
And it is very sunny but we are lucky because we have pools.

AUSTRALIA
Uluru is the biggest rock in Australia.
Southern cross is on our flag in  the top left corner.
The sand is sometimes
Red, the sky and the water always blue
Across the lands that are like gold
Lots of animals strolled the land. The
Islands are clean
AUSTRALIA!!!

Australia fire men are
Using their hoses to
Stop  the people from
The fire. People are
Really thankful for
All the things they do. People
Love them for saving them.

By Laura A.

Australia is very young.
Under the sun and stars the fire fighters battle.
Slowly but surely the firefighters are gaining control.
Thankfully not much lives have been lost.
Roaring and crackling, the fires erupt from the earth.
Already the fires have covered lots of land.
Little rain has come.
In flocks birds flee.
Australians are fighting for their land.

Australia
Uluru is in the Northern Territory.
Some forests are usually burnt down.
Trees , grass and houses are burnt too.
Red skies are getting redder.
Australia doesn't deserve this.
Loved ones have died from fires.
Innocent people have died in fires .
Australia will never die because of its history.

Australia  is a nice  place.
Unfortunately  there are bush  fires,
So  all  the  firemen  give  up  their  time
To  put  out  all  the  fires . All
Round  Australia  people
Are  in  danger
Lives  are  missing  from  the  fires
think  we  should  get  more  firemen  for
Australia
