Australia is a land of many contrasts. Each year when we commence school for the year, there seems to be some sort of disaster occurring in some part of Australia. In 1997, it was devastating bushfires and in 1998 and 1999, floods. In 2000 to celebrate the new millennium, Mother Nature was kind and we were lucky to get through Australia Day with no disasters anywhere. In 2002, we once again saw disaster in the form of bushfires sweeping across New South Wales at Christmas time -  so this year's Acrostic poems are dedicated to the courageous fire fighters who gave up their Christmas to try and save homes and lives. Because of their efforts, no human lives were lost although  500 000 hectares of bush land and 100 homes were destroyed and many species of animals were devastated.

Acrostic Poetry is written using a word as the title and each letter of the word then begins each line of the poem.

At Christmas time there came a blaze,
Unusually hot conditions made the bush ignite,
Strong men and women came from across the land
To fight fires caused by malicious hands,
Rallying to help their fellow man,
And give up their Christmas, to help those who
Lost everything.
I dedicate this page to
All our brave fire fighters.

Uluru is in the desert
Stars flood the sky
There are lots of deserts with
Red sands scattered across Australia
Australia has lots of nature
Lands other than this,
Islands other than this,
Australia tops them all !

As the sun sets on
Uluru Australia's largest rock
Songs of all kinds of birds fill the air.
Today is over. Night is falling.
Rabbits hop to their burrows.
A land of beautiful animals.
Lizards, small little reptiles.
In our far & wide country
Animals large & small live.

Australia is where the first Fleet settled at Sydney cove in 1788.
Under the hot sun they work.
Settlers start building houses near the waters edge.
Right near the waters edge they keep on working.
Tides come really close.
A month has past and a house is built.
Low houses and high ones too.
In and out of the new houses, people go.

Australia is a big country.
Under the stars are some fireworks.
Some people fight in wars and some don't.
Tops of houses are bright and colourful.
Rain falls from the starry sky.
Let's go to the park for lunch.
In the winter it is very cold.
